Coloring with a purpose at five
Five-year-olds can follow a two-step instruction on a page: color the number, then count the dots. Our number pages are built around that. Numbers 1 to 10 pair each numeral with a set of objects to count; Numbers 11 to 20 use ten-frames, so fourteen is visibly a full ten and four more, which is how the concept is taught in kindergarten.
The alphabet set gives each letter in upper and lower case with a dashed tracing row. By five, most children can trace with a pencil rather than a crayon, so the row becomes real handwriting practice.
Which pages to print first
Letters and numbers first if your child is heading to kindergarten. Simple Patterns are a good change of pace: a mandala or a repeating shape with big cells, which five-year-olds find calming and like to color symmetrically.

What should a 5 year old be able to color?
A single subject with several parts, staying mostly inside a thick line, with deliberate color choices. Many five-year-olds are ready for a simple scene too. The pages here range from preschool-tier single subjects to the easiest kids-tier scenes, so you can pick the level that fits.
Do you have coloring pages that teach numbers?

Pencil or crayon at five?
Both. Crayons are still best for filling big areas quickly; colored pencils let a five-year-old color the small parts neatly and start to shade. For the tracing rows, a regular pencil is right.
