How to use these pages
Teen numbers are where counting gets hard: the words do not follow a pattern (eleven, twelve) and the numerals hide a ten. Each page here shows the numeral big enough to color and, underneath, two ten-frames. The first is always full; the second holds the extra dots. Say 'ten' for the full frame, then count on through the second frame, and let your child color the numeral last.

What to expect at ages 4 to 6
Four-year-olds will color the numeral and the dots and enjoy the counting talk without grasping place value yet. Five- and six-year-olds start to see the full frame as 'ten' without counting it, which is the whole point of a ten-frame. Pair this set with Numbers 1 to 10 for the earlier stage.

A ten-frame makes ten visible as a unit. A child who sees a full frame plus four dots learns that fourteen is ten and four, which is the idea behind every two-digit number. Pictures of fourteen apples only teach counting to fourteen.
